This is my 2-3 minute video made for New Communication Technologies. I used a flipcam to film it, and as you can see in the movie I had different locations. I used iMovie to edit the movie, and the music was found at freemusicarchive and in the iMovie software. I used CamStudio recorder to record the facebook chat

Essay Topic

Hello there!

I have finally decided on my Essay topic for my assignment in New Communication Technologies. I have chosen Essay topic number 3: 

"What is communication? Do whales communicate? Do birds? Do atoms? Does DNA communicate? What would you suggest as the limits to communication? When does a failure of human communication occur?"

I went to bubble.us and layed out some thoughts on what my essay might contain, this was very easy to use, and I think it is much better than post its, or drawing it myself.

I also used the Diigo feature, where I could highlight, bookmark pages, add photos and then keep everything in one place. The internet is making things easier than they were I guess.

Here is my Diigo page if you want to have a look on what I have found so far. This will be my first Academic Essay since I started at Griffith, and I hope I will do well. I am going to get started right away.

WikiLeaks

This week, in lectures we talked about CyberPolitics and eDemocracy, and also about Wikileaks and the Julian Assange case. Before starting the New Communication Technology course, I did not know who Assange was. I had however heard of Wikileaks, but not enough. To be honest I thought it was related to Wikipeda. That is embarrassing. I understand now that Wikileaks is a non-for-profit organization that publishes secrets and classified information to the people, and that Assange now is being wanted because of it. So Wikileaks and Assange is what they call hacker-activists. Which I understand as hacking for good, not evil. When I have heard the term "hacking" I have always thought about evil people wanting to destroy or find information about innocent people, but I guess there are as much "good" hackers as there are "bad". They call them Whistleblowers, the ones that finds out big secrets that for example the government have been lying about - and tells it to everyone by posting it anonymously online

I am pleased with the new information I have learned so far, and hope to be even more educated in the CyberPolitics, and I will probably follow the case against Assagne more closely now.

Survey results

Last week I posted a Survey on my blog, asking questions about social media focusing mostly on Facebook. I found that doing surveys can be informative and exciting, either for resarch or just for your own curiousity. Here are my results:

I did 10 questions in my Survey, and I had 20 responses. Of those 20, 70% were between 16-25. Most of the people (65%) started using Facebook in 2007. And since facebook first opened for all in the fall of 2006, it seems like most of the people where quick to jump on the "Facebook wave". I also asked in the survey if they were one of those who refused going on Facebook but then later gave in where only 25% said "yes".

I went on to ask how long people think Facebook will be here, where I put both "Facebook will be here forever" and "10+" which is pretty much of the same thing, anyway 40% of the people actually thinks that Facebook will be here forever. 

I then went on to ask what they mainly used Facebook for. Where 85% answered "Keep in touch with my friends and family", followed by "Kill time" 55% and "Sneak around" 40% (see picture)

When asking if Facebook was addictive 80 % answered "yes"

I wanted to know if Facebook or any other social media had ever helped them progress in their carrier, were the majority (65%) said no, 25% said it was slightly helpful, 10% said "yes, some" and no one answered "yes, definietly".

Last question on the Survey was which social medias they currently are using, where 100% answered Facebook and Youtube followed on with 80%.

Political Participation

Because I am from Norway this blogpost was not easy for me to do, since I do not know that much about Australian politics. I have been given some tasks on political participation, and will now reply on which ones I would do while sticking to my political beliefs.

I searched around for e-petitions and I did find one I wanted to sign. Because I was not sure if i am a "resident" of Queensland or not. I decided to hold of on doing it since the condition of use said something about being fined and imprisoned which is not something I would like to happen. Anyway the e-petition i wanted to sign is called 'Ban on lightweight plastic bags in Queensland' - and I chose this one because I agree, that we use to much plastic, not only in Queensland but all over the globe. If more people knew that plastic is made of oil, and that the ocean is full of it and killing the animals, they might just think twice before using too much of it?

I rarely comment on stuff, not even on Facebook. Not to go in to details about me, but I do have some problems with people judging others opinions, and that is why I tend to comment in my head instead, so the next thing I was to do was respond to a blogger on major news site. I am not going to do this, since I have some troubles with it.

Next on the list was contacting Barack Obama - to do this i could try tweeting him. I am not going to do this either, but I will tell you this; A couple of days ago he was on 'reddit', speaking to the people via social medias. If you go HERE, you can see what he talked about.

When searching the NBN homepage I searched for my postcode to find out when I will get NBN and this was the results:

Next on the list I had to find the local, state and federal representatives where I live. This is where i found information about the representatives: Role in government - I am not going to send them a message, since I do not have anything I want to ask them. And I wont list all of their names, since there is so many. Here is another link to the federal representatives of Queensland: Senators and Members

Doing this, I found out more about Australia and Queensland, and how politics works on the Internet

Social media

This week we have been talking about Social Media, I made a survey about social media use - mostly on Facebook, the results will be out very soon. I would like to use this opportunity to talk about cats on the Internet. No actually, I would like to discuss something I believe is important. About privacy in social media when it comes to police matters. I will use a news story that has been going on in Norway lately, where a 16 year old girl has gone missing - assumed kidnapped. The police wanted to check her Facebook account for possible contact with people, but Facebook will not give out passwords to anyone, not even the police. I wonder when the police can overrule social media, or if they ever will? is there not a time where the "laws of Internet" should not apply? We do not know in this case, if there is reasons for checking the Facebook account, but if there was - it seems just stupid that they cannot get access. Just something to think about.
